5crisp and easy  Oct 09, 2008
Bought this a few weeks ago. Easy to install, amazingly crisp and clear. It was a cheaper alternative to an Apple 30" screen and it has filled the bill beautifully.

5Works fine under Fedora-9 Linux  Sep 13, 2008
First of all, Linux and BSD folks don't need to sit this one out. You too can use this wonderful monitor. It works just fine, both in ascii terminal mode (eg. boot messages show up with no problems) and it works flawlessly under the current Xorg.

The one thing that takes a bit of getting used to is that iconifying or maximizing a window is almost always a mistake. There is usually no need to iconify anything when you are done using it. Just tile all your windows and leave them there. There is also no real reason to make anything full screen. Windows are just too darn wide to use that way. It took me almost 4 weeks of slapping myself on the forehead to stop hitting the iconify keystroke when I was done with a window.

One minor pain in the neck with this monitor is that it is dual-link. That means one needs to find a dual-link capable frame buffer. I got a passively cooled ATI Radeon HD 3450 and that works just fine under Xorg.

The energy star rating on this is a bit of a joke. Who are they kidding? This thing takes 130 Watts, that is more than my old CRT monitors used to take. Still, I have no problem paying a bit more in electricity over a 24" monitor to get this much added real estate. It really is the same 100dpi as the 24" 1200x1920 monitors, just with a few more usable pixels tacked on horizontally and vertically. Once you get spoiled using this monitor, you'll never enjoy using a 24" one again.

There is one minor bug with this monitor. There is a minor video instability that one only sees with solid backgrounds. One can see bands of slightly brighter horizontal lines moving up the screen rapidly. It is almost like the back lighting isn't filtered enough against the 60hz/120hz power supply ripple and the ~60 hz refresh of the lcd are beating a bit. It is quite noticeable to me on the blueish fedora-9 login screen.

All in all, even with the minor quibbles I'm still smiling from ear to ear. This is a great toy. Highly recommended.

added 2008-09-25:
Actual power usage as measured by a "KILL A WATT" power meter:

124-127 Watts Samsung 305T (on, highest intensity)
(note, power usage cycles, hence the two numbers)

72-77 Watts Samsung 305T (on, med intensity, cyclic also)

52 Watts Samsung 305T (on, lowest intensity)

0 Watts Samsung 305T (DPMS induced off, blanked, backlight off)
(note, no power used, there is a transient state
of 4 watts for a few seconds as it is powering down.)

0 Wattts Samsung 305T (soft-off via front panel button)
(also no power used)

(sorry, the lame Amazon formatting software breaks the nice columns I attempted to make. -wsr)

4Great Value, Great Product  Aug 12, 2008
I replaced the Samsung SyncMaster 226BW with this model. So far it's been great. Besides the bigger size and higher resolution, I can now move the screen up or down as well as tilt it back and forth. I do miss the on screen controls though (for brightness, contrast, and so on) which were available with the 226BW. I had this shipped overseas, since it's not readily available around where I live. It arrived in perfect condition and worked without a hitch.

5Great Investment for Design Professional  Jul 09, 2008
This monitor is great for AutoCAD. I upgraded from a 22", which now resides as the "side-car" to this big dude. The best word I can use to describe my experience with this 30" monitor is "comfortable". Everything seems bigger, clearer and easier. I expect to get many years out of this investment, which helped justify the cost. As someone who sits in front of it every day for 8 hours, I can say that the image is flawless and gorgeous, and it helps me work faster and longer with less eye-strain. Less flipping around between windows, less panning around on large drawings, more space to spread out tools and palettes, big enough to tile multiple drawings on one screen, etc. If you are a pro, you should already have one of these. Maybe two.

Follow Up 10/09/2008:
Today, after 8 months of regular usage, the monitor died. Samsung is sending a tech to repair it, but apparently the power supply went bad. So far, support has been responsive. We'll see what happens next.

59/10 for the Samsung 305t Plus  Jun 16, 2008
I was on the verge of purchasing the Apple Cinema Display 30" for the photography work that I do.
However, as of June 2008, the ACD is already considered old and overpriced especially for the currect specs.
I started to take a look around and was interested in the 30" Dell LCDs however there were issues with oversaturation on the red hues. I know how that is since Ive had previous Dell LCDs.
I luckily found reviews on the Samsung 30" 305t and quickly became interested. However there were few reviews but the ones out there were great.
I finally pulled pulled the trigger and purchased it and got it a few days later.
I must say, the reviews out there say that the LCD is pretty well calibrated out of the box. I am currently running a Macbook Pro (Feb 2008) and when i hooked it up, the colors looked very hyper saturated. Reds, Greens and Blues.
I have a Gregtag Macbeth i1 display 2 for screen calibration. Without the OSD on the Samsung, I was not able to manually adjust the RGB color levels and the LCD was not giving me what I wanted.
I calibrated over 5 times with different light settings and it was still the same.
I called eye-one for assistance and they told me that the RGB controls werent that great and it was better to let the i1 adjust it. For some strange reason after that, I ran it again in advanced mode (which I did prior) and after a couple of resets, The colors in CS3 (PS & Bridge) were giving me accurate colors. Some icons and programs still had "hyper" colors but as long as the photos looked good, I was ok with it.
The other main issue I had was colors on Firefox looked super oversaturated. I soon found out that Firefox 2.x did not load color profile whereas Safari did (althoug Safari was close but it was still slightly less colorful). My solution to this was downloading Firefox 3.0 beta and installing a color management add-on. Solved the problem. Next week, Firefox 3.0 will be out and I wont have to use the beta anymore.
So overall, after 5 days with it, love it! Everything looks great. Don't hesitate for a moment.
