The Smithsonian 900X Microscope is a super safe microscope set! No glass or sharp instruments are used. It features a durable, die-cast microscope body. View objects 900 times larger than their actual size. Three interchangeable objective lenses with powers of 100x, 450x and 900x allow you to closely examine your subjects. There's even a four-color rotating color filter under the stage. A light source provides illumination of the object that you're viewing, and a mirror reflects light directly onto the slide. The Smithsonian even converts to a projecting microscope. When you're finished viewing, safely secure the included lens cover over the eyepiece. Also features a weighted base, revolving turret, and two clips on the stage to secure slides. Durable plastic carrying case with see-through window and side latch included.

Great Gift For a Young Scientist Jan 11, 2007 I am very pleased with the Smithsonian Optics900X Microscope in Carry Case that I purchased for my 10 year old Grandson for Christmas. It was with great joy that I watched him open this gift and immediately begin to explore the microscopic world around us.I was even more pleased to be able to purchase this on Amazon because such products are virtually unavailable in regular stores. It is a shame that all the attention is given to video games and such rather than educational products involving science. The carry case is an added bonus that helps keep all the components organized. I would recommend having prepared slides included with this product. I did purchase prepared slides from another vendor and that is the only reason this product received 4 rather than 5 stars. I would highly recommend this product for intermediate elementary aged school children as an introduction to microscopic studies.

just a toy Dec 30, 2006 We purchased this microspcope for our 9 year old so we weren't expecting it to be a professional tool. We are very disappointed by how it will only focus in the lowest setting. Controls are not tight. It is clearly meant to be just a toy and nothing else. A waste of money and the compnay is arguing over a return of the item.
